Stewardship Travel along the CA Highway 1 Discovery Route in coastal San Luis Obispo County (SLO CAL) engages visitors in over 50 bite-size activities and contribution opportunities. Stewardship Travel adds meaning and fun while immersing visitors deeply in the natural and cultural heritage experiences that California’s unique Central Coast has to offer.

In conjunction with Coastal Discovery and Stewardship in January and February, Friends of the Elephant Seal will be offering Exploratory and Rookery Tours each Saturday.

The Piedras Blancas rookery, on Highway 1, seven miles north of San Simeon is the only Northern Elephant Seal Rookery in the world that is easily accessible, free, and open to the public every day of the year. The Northern Elephant Seal migrates thousands of miles twice each year, from the open oceans to a land-based rookery, where it breeds, births, molts, and rests between trips. Piedras Blancas is home to over 24,000 animals that range from 70 lbs. newborn pups to 5,000 lbs. adult males. See these magnificent marine mammals up close on one of the prettiest coastlines in California. Best times are October through May with the big show (birthing and breeding) in January and February. Ensure a safe and pleasant viewing experience for everyone by following NOAA's marine wildlife viewing guidelines.

Docents are at the rookery daily from 10am to 4pm, and often longer during the busy season. Docents can be spotted in royal blue coats and are available to answer your questions, show photos and share information about the seals.
