Stewardship Travel along the CA Highway 1 Discovery Route in coastal San Luis Obispo County (SLO CAL) engages visitors in over 50 bite-size activities and contribution opportunities. Stewardship Travel adds meaning and fun while immersing visitors deeply in the natural and cultural heritage experiences that California’s unique Central Coast has to offer.
Visit the shark tank during feeding time at the Central Coast Aquarium in Avila Beach for an unforgettable experience and a peek at the underwater world of sharks.
Every Saturday and Sunday, from 2 to 3pm, visitors learn about local shark species while watching them interact with each other and feed. Central Coast Aquarium exhibits feature local species of sharks, including the Horn Shark, which has horns that grow out of its back, and the Grey Smooth-Hound Shark, a sleek and powerful hunter.
On exhibit, the Aquarium also has skates and rays that are close relatives to sharks; they scoot along the sandy bottom of the ocean vacuuming up food as they go. Knowledgeable and well trained volunteers provide interesting shark and ray facts during the feeding tour. After the tour, the whole family is invited to experience the popular shark petting with the gentle Swell Sharks, and learn even more about these magnificent and misunderstood creatures of the deep.
Gain a deeper connection on vacation through activities and charitable donation opportunities that protect wildlife, habitat, and cultural heritage sites.
