Coastal SLO CAL welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in the local marine culture, coastal heritage and natural attractions along the iconic CA Highway 1 Discovery Route through a series of events and activities.

Enjoy special marine focused events, uniquq wine and food tastings and festival, stewardship travel activities, and Wildlife Viewing Tips all while adding meaning and connecting deeper to the nature and culture of our area. "Throughout the annual Coastal Discovery & Stewardship Celebration guests are invited to explore marine life from abalone to elephant seals, learn about nature preserves, participate in fun citizen science activities, and enjoy the many seaside hikes found on the Central Coast," says Katie Sturtevant, Stewardship Travel Director. "There are unique signature events like Sharks After Dark at the Central Coast Aquarium, free films at Hearst Castle Theater and almost 40 must-do activities the whole family will enjoy."

We are excited to be featuring the film Disneynature Oceans at the historic Hearst Castle Theater for six consecutive Saturdays during the celebration. This is a spectacular story about remarkable creatures under the sea. Stunning images await viewers as they journey into the depths of a wonderland filled with mystery, beauty and power. It's an unprecedented look at deep-water creatures through their own eyes. Incredible state-of-the-art underwater filmmaking will take your breath away as you migrate with whales, swim alongside a great white shark and race with dolphins at play. Filled with adventure, comedy and drama, Oceans is a fascinating and thought-provoking experience you will not soon forget.

Along the Whale Trail you'll be looking over the waters of one of our nation's most spectacular marine protected areas, offering some of the best wildlife viewing in the world - including 34 species of marine mammals! Search for the heart-shaped blows of gray whales, tall dorsal fins of orcas, or feeding humpback and blue whales. Look for seals and sea lions on offshore rocks and sea otters wrapped up in kelp. You can see amazing marine life at the Whale Trail's shore-based sites at any time of year.

Be a wildlife steward. Give animals the space they need to eat, rest and socialize. Keep your distance and please do not touch, feed or chase wildlife. Enjoy and help protect this diverse and fragile marine environment.

The Whale Trail is a series of sites where the public may view orcas, other cetaceans and marine mammals from shore. Learn more in this video

Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment by establishing a network of viewing sites along the whales’ trails along the Salish Sea and the Pacific Coast.
